Lower Big Garlic Falls

sideways slide on one of Huron Mountain's rivers

Located near County Road 550 though still difficult to reach because of private property, the lower waterfall of the Big Garlic River is a unique drop over dark rocks. There are some upper drops that are small, cluttered cascades, mostly filled with trees and brush. The main drop is the lower one, where the entire river slides sideways down a smooth slab before thundering into a solid rock wall and boiling back on course.

Directions

Access to the lower drops can be a bit tricky. You can try parking on County Road KE, just off of 550 where the it crosses the river, and follow the Big Garlic upstream. This route is kinda-sorta on private property. Otherwise, if you’re looking for more of an adventure, bushwhack north from Elliot Donnelly Tract after visting {{link=“falls/little-garlic-river/little-garlic-falls”}}. The cabin to avoid on the Big Garlic is just off of 550.
