Waterfalls of the Keweenaw Area
Swollen plunge over Haven Falls

Haven Falls

curtain of water in a pleasant Lac la Belle park

Haven Falls sits in a small roadside park in the town of Lac la Belle. A nice pavilion with restrooms and plenty of picnic benches surround the waterfall and creek, with occasional glimpses of the lake across the road from between the town’s houses. The falls are a steep fanning drop over rough conglomerate rock with several smaller upstream drops on the cluttered little creek. Depending on the time of the year, this waterfall turns from a foaming curtain to the barest trickle of water down the rock.

Directions

From US-41 head south on Lac la Belle Road for 4.3 miles, bearing right at the fork for an additional .5 miles. Haven Falls Park will be on the right side of the road. Park here and follow the creek to the falls, which should be visible from the road. To see the upstream drops head up the crumbling path on the right side of the falls.

Visits

Seen in April, June and October.

  1. a solid sheet of white

The waterfall itself was a solid sheet of white, much more grand than the usual half-trickle found here. This was a bittersweet visit. Haven Falls was one of the first waterfalls that I had been to in the Keweenaw, dating all the way back to June of 2008 with Katie and Logan. Now, today I was here with only Logan, and soon we would be moving far away from Houghton.

  2. dried to the barest trickle this late in the year

A quick roadside stop on the way south to Lac la Belle, where the falls had dried to the barest trickle this late in the year.

  3. I was surprised to see a roadside waterfall and park just north of our road; there was no mention of Haven Falls on the sources I had used for planning our trip. There was a path leading up the right side, one too steep for a little puppy, so I headed up the short climb alone to photograph the small conglomerate drops.
